SEO is key to making sales. If you're only promoting on the website that hosts your store, you're only promoting to other sellers. You need to be found in a search engine like Google, Yahoo or Bing. How? By peppering key words and phrases into your titles, tags and descriptions. Search engines scour the web for keywords. When potential customers go online to shop, they may just type in a keyword and click on the first few choices their search engine provides. If that keyword is in your title, tags and item description, it will (hopefully) rank higher in the search engine's output.
Choosing the right keywords is crucial. For example, using the keyword "pens" to promote handcrafted wooden pens would not yield optimal results. "Pens" will give you everything from promotional products to bulk sale retailers. So how do we find the right keyword? A great tool is Google AdWords (http://adwords.google.com/).
In AdWords, enter a short list of words that describe your product. For example, entering "handcrafted, wood, pens" yields a number of results that can then be filtered and narrowed down. Look for keywords that have a low "competition" listing with a high "monthly searches" number. Make a list of these keywords and add as many as possible to your item titles, descriptions and tags.
