Articents & SEO
Published January 14, 2013
Here at Articents, we’re constantly working hard to gain more exposure online which will in turn increase the amount of traffic into your shops. One of the ways we do this is through the use of various Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. In fact, when we first designed Articents, we tried very hard to make all of your shops and product pages SEO friendly right from the start. We soon learned, however, that there was still plenty of room for improvement. With this in mind, I’d like to share with you some recent updates that were made to the site along with some of the results that we’ve encountered because of them.
For starters, we found ways to move the most important content (for instance, your product information) to the top of the page structure by moving the non-essential items (the header, side navigation and footer) to the bottom. This helps the search engine determine what is truly important on the page vs. what is not relevant. We also added a special markup language to each of your product pages so that we can describe in detail what a search engine is looking at when it indexes the items you have for sale (read more at http://schema.org if you are interested!).
But we didn’t stop here. We also introduced a new paging feature along with a “View All” option that is now included everywhere a list of products is displayed. We then added instructions within each of those links to help inform search engines how to properly navigate with them. Search engines love this, because it helps them easily find and then index new content more efficiently. They also love sitemap.xml documents, which we also improved upon with this past release. Lastly, we also added better support for meta descriptions while also ensuring that every page has a unique name within the site.
So, how did we do? The results are still coming in, but from the graph below you can see that more content than ever before is now being indexed. We’ve also seen a considerable increase in traffic sent over from Google as well as some of the other search engines.
It’s important to note that we are not yet finished either. Far from it, actually. While the changes we described above were necessary, they are not a panacea. In truth, search engines really love great content and this is where we need your assistance. To help make your store stand out and take advantage of these updates, we ask that you be as detailed as possible with your product descriptions as well as the product names themselves. Lastly, we would also like to ask you to link back to your Articents store from your blog, website, social media etc. This will actually benefit all of us by becoming more exposed online and by ranking even higher in Google’s eyes.
